During troubling times, it was difficult to feel confident about my future. For a while, I struggled to support my family and wished I had chosen a different career path. Against all odds, opportunity knocked when I got laid off from my job.
The real estate world presented itself when my mom and I were exposed to the benefits of property investment. During the first few years living in Cambridge, we lived paycheck-to-paycheck. My mom had her dream job as a social work director, but it wasn’t a high-paying career. She chose to settle us in Somerville to make ends meet. Her only option was to buy a two-family home – renting out the second unit to help cover the mortgage. It was more of an act of desperation than a savvy real estate investment, but it paid off.
Several years passed, and with the property fully renovated, it significantly increased in value. The rental income my mom received helped pay off the mortgage, and it was even enough to pay off the mortgage for our new home in a more spacious place in Westminster. I truly witnessed the power of real estate firsthand. Thanks to the courage my mom has, she was able to take the risks that gave us a comfortable life.
I thought about how I would build long-term wealth and live comfortably myself. My conclusion? I chose the REALTOR® route, although I didn’t find it immediately.
Similar to my mom, I got a job in mental health, working as a personal trainer and wellness counselor. It was a gratifying career, but it had no opportunity for financial growth. At this point, I had a wife and daughter to take care of, and my doubts and fears kept me locked in my own paycheck-to-paycheck lifestyle. We relied on government care just to afford basic groceries. My future looked bleak. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, I got laid off.
Losing a job is tough on you and those you care about. It creates a sense of uncertainty, and left me wondering how and when I’d get back up on my feet. Thankfully, I used this bad news as an opportunity to follow my true passion in real estate. I chose to ignore my doubts and take control of my destiny.
I braced for the challenges that came my way, and there were many during my first year. All they did was fuel my ambition. I strove to provide value to my clients and become a true advocate for their needs. My favorite part of the job is when clients shoot me a “thank you” text long after the sale is over. It’s a reminder that I’ve done my job well.
My ambitions and goals now have grown in scale; I aim to positively impact as many people as possible. I owe a huge part of this mindset to my mom, who showed me that no matter what I’m going through, if you work hard and do the right thing, good things will happen. It’s restored my optimism and hope for my every client’s future.
